Some users asked us about battery consumption using GPS.
Even if Eriadne has been designed to reduce at mininum the power resources, when it's running it uses energy. The dilemma is if it's better to have a fully charged mobile to be able to call help or know where you are being able to communicate your position and a less charged mobile ?

The better solution for us is to make Eriadne send once or twice times per hour the full path, or parts of it. Can happen that the place there you get blocked are not covered by the signal (holes, cracks, depressions, etc.) while perhaps a few hundred meters before the signal was present and the path sent. Finally have a fully charged phone but not be able to communicate can be as bad that its exact opposite.

The solution is apparently in the middle with the following advices:

  • Use an external GPS device connected via Bluetooth. In this way the GPS uses its own battery saving the phone.
  • Turn off Eriadne during longer stops. The path can be continued at next start.
Or have a portable solar batteries charged as the Sunbag designed and built by the Swiss company Off-Grid Systems.
